THE GIFT OF THE MAGI
Introduction : OLlVER HENRY is the pen name of William Sydney porter he was born in 1862 and died in the year 1910 . He wrote three hudred short stories which are collected in different volumes named cabbage and ‘kings ‘. The four maloom ‘, roads of destiny , ‘ waifs and strays ‘ and ‘The voice of the city .
O Henry’s short stories are best known for wit ‘ word play wara ctaracterisation and clever twist endings . He was compared whit the famous french short story writer guy de manupassant . Both O. Henry and manupassant are famous for surprise an attractive endings of their short stories . But the stories of o . Henry are considered more playpal and of optimistic nature than of manupassant .
The present story ‘ The gift of the magi ‘. tells about the deep love of della and Jim for each other . lt draws a conclusion that all physical possessions whit a person , however valuable they may be are of little value before true love.
SUMMARY IN ENGLISH
The story is a story of love and sacrifice and revolves round the pious system of giving gifts to the loved ones on Christmas . Jim and della are young couple living in a modest flat . Jim earns a meagre amount of twenty dollars a week and manages the house with that limited income . Della is a housewife , pretty and beautiful who loved her husband from the inner core of her heart . Jim equally loved his wife and both husband and wife were managing the household affairs without any complain or bickering
On she eve of Christmas , della decides to buy a good gift for her husband but the meagre money she could save from daily purchases for the house was only one dollar and eighty seven cents .The writer says _”That was all . And sixty cents of it was in pennies . Pennies saved one and two at a time , by bulldozing the grocer and the vegetable man and the butcher …..Three times della counted it . One dollar and eighty seven cents . And the next day would be Christmas
The situation made della very sad and actually she was in tears . “But the family had two prize possessions . One was Jim ‘s gold watch that had been his father ‘s and his grand father ‘s . The other was della ‘s hair . It reached below her knee and made itself almost a garment for her . It was shinning like a cascade of brown waters.”
In aspur of a moment della decided to sell our her hair to buy gift for jim .she put on her old brown jacket and the hat on head and rushed to the market . She reached to a shop dealing in ‘hair goods of all kinds. “Will you buy my hair ?”asked della .”l buy har “—replied the lady on the counter .
The deal was settled in twenty dollars . Della took the money and went on searchings for a suitable gift for jim . Ultimately she found one -it was a platinum fob chain for the Jim’s watch . It was worthy of Jim ‘s beautiful watch . She paid twenty one dollars for the chain and was back home with the coveted gift in her hand .
As soon as della entered her house, the intoxication of buying the gift gave way to reasoning and she started thinking as to what will be the reaction of Jim when he will see her without hair . Will ne be happy ?Will he still love her in her changed look ? She tried to repair the hair by curling the left one short hairs on her head .
Jim was due to arrive at 7’o clock and she started doing silent prayers . She whispered —”please God make him think I am still pretty .” “Jim stepped inside the door as immovable as a setter at the scent of quality his eyes were fi”xed on della and there was an expression in then that she could not read and it terrified her .”
“Jim darling “she cried don’t look at me that way I had my hair cut a sold it because I could not have lived through chritmas without giving you present .It will grow again.” Jim looked about the room curiously .There (Jim ) drew a package from the pocket of the overcoat and threw that one table . He asked della to open the package and told her that the mystery be unwrapped immediately .
Deall opened the package —there lay a set of three combs made of pure tortoise shell with jewelled rims . They were expensive combs . Once della had seen these combs in a big shop window in newyork and had actually logned to have it . But Alas ! the hairs were not there to adorn those combs . She hugged the combs to her bosom and just said with a smile_”My hair grows Sol fast Jim !” Now it was the turn of Jim .had not seen the gift della had brought for him . She held it out to him eagerly upon her open palm. The dull precious metal flashed on her palm. Della asked ‘Isn ‘t it a dandy Jim ? I hunted all over town to find it. You will have to look at the time a hundred times a day now . Give me your watch I want to see how it looks on it ?”
Jim ignored the words of della . He tum led down on the couch and put his hands under the back of his head and smiled. Jim told della ” let us put our Christmas presebts away and keep them for a while. They are too nice to use just at present . I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs.
“And this is the climax of the whole story. Jim sold his prize possession watch to buy gift for della and the chain which della bought for jim ‘s watch was of has no use now because the watch has gone. Similarly the comb which jim brought for della had on use because the hair of della had gone. Hence the combs were of on use for the present.
Both Jim and della sacrificed their best possession for the sake of love for each other. The material possessions were lost but the eternal love won and stood the test of time. The magi invented the art of giving Christmas presents. They were wisemen of their time. The author in the end of the story says _”all who give ind receive presents (gifts) are wise persos and they are the magi.”
So Jim and della are wise people and they are the magi. Of the day. The story ends here with the tregedy of loss and comedy of win. A win, for supreme love.

काहानीकार के बारे में:। ‘ द गिफ्त ऑफ मेजाइ ‘ शीर्षक इस कहानी के लेखक हैं ऑलिवर हेनरी जिनका असली नाम विलियम सिडनी पोटर था। कहानीकार के रुप में वे ऑलिवर हेनरी के नाम से जाने जाते हैं। इनका जन्म 1862 में और मृत्यु 1910में हुई। इस प्रकार के कुल 48वषों तक जीवित रहे। इन्होंने करीब 300कहानियाँ लिखीं जो अलग अलग-अलग संग्रहों में संकलित हैं। इनके प्रकाशित कहानी संग्रह के नाम हैं ” कैबेज एण्ड किंग्स ‘ ‘ द फोर मिलियन ‘, रोड्स ऑफ डेस्टिनी’, ‘ वेफ्स एण्ड स्टेज ‘ और ‘ द वायस ऑफ़ द सिटी’ । ओ. हेनरी की कहानियों की मुख्य विशेषतायें हैं — शब्दों का चयन, पात्रों का जीवंत चरित्र—चित्रण, हास्य तथा उसका(कहानी का ) घुमावदार अन्त । ओ. हेनरी की तुलना प्रसिद्ध फ्रांसीसी कहानीकार गाय डी. मुपासां से की जाती है। हेनरी को अमेरिका का मुपासा माना जाता है। दोनों के कहानी का अंत अत्यंत आकर्षक होता है लेकिन हेनरी की कहानियों में नाटकीयता अधिक है और उनमें आस्था के स्वर ज्यादा उभर कर आते हैं। प्रस्तुत कहानी ‘ द गिफ्त ऑफ मेजाइ’ डेला और जिम के प्यार की कहानी है। इस कहानी से यह निष्कर्ष निकालता है कि सांसारिक वस्तुएँ चाहे जितनी भी मूल्यवान क्यों न हो, उनकी कीमत सच्चा प्यार की तुलना में कुछ भी नहीं है। वे प्यार के सामने तुच्छ हैं।
कहानी का सारांश :
1. एक डाॅलर और सत्तासी सेंट-कुल गिनती के इतने ही पैसे थे उनके पास। इन पैसों को अपने दैनिक खर्च से कट – काटकर बचाया गया था। इसी क्रम में कभी किराने वाले पर दबाव डाला गया, कभी सब्जीवाले और कसाईवाले से झगड़ाकर पैसे कम कराये गये और कंजूस बनने का आरोप भी सहना पड़ा। डेला ने इस बचाये धन को तीन बार गिना – एक डॉलर और सत्तासी सेंट । और कल क्रिसमस का त्योहार है।
2. डेला के पास करने को इस समय कुछ नहीं था। वह अपने पुराने एवं गंदे छोटे से सोफे पर पसर गयी और सिसकने लगी। जीवन सिसकियाँ, सुबकियों और मुस्कानों के बीच चलता है जिसमें क्रन्दन का स्वर ही प्रमुख होता है।
3. जबतक डेला अपने को सम्हलने की कोशिश करती है, उसके घर पर एक दृष्टि डाली जाय। आठ डाॅलर प्रति सप्ताह पर एक सजा – सजाया फ्लैट । उसकी सजावट का वर्णन करना आवश्यक नहीं है पर भिखारियों के झुंड के लिए यह एक उपयुक्त स्थान दिखाई पड़ रहा था।
4. प्रवेश द्वार के पास एक पत्र – पेटी लटक रही थी जिसमें किसी पत्र का प्रवेश सम्भव नहीं प्रतीत होता था। उसके पास ही एक इलेक्ट्रिक बेल का बटन था जिसको दबाना और बजाना साधारण व्यक्ति के लिये आसान नहीं था। उसके साथ एक नामपट्ट लटक रहा था जिसपर लिखा था – श्रीमान जेम्स डिलिंघम यंग।
5. यह नामपट उस समय की याद दिलाता था जब श्री डिलिंघम, की गणना समृद्ध लोगों में होती थी और उन्हें तीस डॉलर प्रति सप्ताह की आमदनी होती थी। जब आय घटकर बीस डालर पर आ गयी तो नामपट के अक्षर घिस – पिटकर मात्र ‘डी’ पर आकर स्थिर हो गये । पर जब डिलिंघम घर आते और अपने फ्लैट में पहुँचते उन्हें जिम कहकर सम्बोधित किया जाता। श्रीमती डिलिंघम , उनका प्यार से आलिंगन करतीं । श्रीमती डिलिंघम का परिचय ‘डेला’ के रुप में पहले ही दिया जा चुका है।
6. डेला ने रोना बंद किया और घरों पर फैल आये आसूँ के बूंदों को पाउडर लगाने वाले पफ से साफ किया। वह खिड़की के पास खड़ी गयी और अपने पिछवाड़े के आंगन में एक भूरी बिल्ली को उसी रंग की चारदीवारी पर चलते हुए देखा। कल क्रिसमस है और उसके पास मात्र एक डॉलर और सत्तासी सेंट हैं जिससे जिम के लिये गिफ्ट खरीदना है। वह महीनों से पैसे बच रही थी। आखिर बीस डॉलर प्रति सप्ताह में होता क्या है ? खर्च बढ़ गये थे। जिसके लिये एक अच्छी – सी भेंट की कल्पना उसके मन में बसी थी – वह सुन्दर और अनोखा उपहार अपने जिम के लिये खरीदना चाहती थी जो उसके सम्मान के अनुकूल हो।
7. कमरे की दो खिड़कियों के बीच एक लम्बा दर्पण की चौड़ी बहुत कम थी और एक दुबला – पतला व्यक्ति उस दर्पण में से पैर अपना सिकुड़ा हुआ प्रतिबिम्ब देख सकता था। चूँकि डेला, छरहरी बदन वाली थी अतः उस आइने में अपने चेहरे को देखने और परखने का उसे अभ्यास हो गया था।
8. अचानक वह आइने के सामने खड़ी हो गयी। उसकी आँखें चमक रही पर चेहरे का रंग फीका पड़ गया था। उसने तेजी के साथ अपने बाल खोले और उसे उसकी पूरी लम्बाई तक लटकने दिया।
9. जेम्स डिलिंघम यंग परिवार के पास दो अमूल्य धरोहर थे जिनपर दोनों को बड़ा गर्व था। एक था एक सोने की कलाई घड़ी जो पहले उसके दादा के पास थी और पिता से जेम्स के पास आती। दूसरी वस्तु थी डेला के लम्बे बाल । इन बालों को देखकर शीना की रानी के सभी रत्न और जवाहरात भी फीके पड़ जाते अगर डेला अपने बालों को लटकाकर रानी के फ्लैट के सामने खड़ी हो जाती। इसी प्रकार राजा सोलोमन अगर अपने भूमिगत खजाने की रखवाली करते होते और जिम अपनी घड़ी को निकाल कर उनके सामने खड़ा हो जाता तो राजा ईष्या से अपनी दाढ़ी बार – बार खुजलाने लगता और सोचता – काश ! यह घड़ी मेरे पास होती ।
10. डेला के खुबसूरत बाल उसके घुटनों के नीचे तक लहराते ये बाल एक झरने की तरह शोभायमान लग रहे थे जिसका जल चमकीला सुनहरा भूरा था जो डेला के सर पर एक गहना जैसा लग रहा था। वह थोड़ी – सी लड़खड़ाई पर अपने को सम्हालते हुए खड़ी हो गयी और उसका आँखों से दो बूँद आँसू नीचे बिछी फटी कालीन पर टपक पड़े।
11. डेला ने अपना पुराना भूरे रंग का जैकेट पहना । पुराना भूरे रंग का टोप धारण किया और अपना स्कर्ट लहराते हुए दरवाजे के बाहर निकल आयी और सीढ़ियों से उतरते हुए सड़क पर आ गयी।
12. उसके पाँव एक जगह आकर रुक गये -वहाँ एक साइनबोर्ड पर लिखा था -“मेडम सोफ्रोनी : सभी प्रकार की केश सामग्री ” डेला हाँफती हुई एक मंजिल ऊपर पहुँच गयी — खदुकान की मालकिन बिल्कुल गोरी, ठंढ़ी और लम्बी एक महिला, पर वह ‘ सोफ्रोनी ‘ नहीं लग रही थी ।
13. डेला ने पूछा – क्या आप मेरा बाल खरीदेंगे ?
14. मैडम ने कहा – मैं बाल खरीदती हूँ । आप अपना हैट उतार लें और मुझे देखने दें कि वे कैसे लगते हैं?
15. डेला ने हैट उतार लिये और बालों का झरना लहराने लगा।
16. मैडम ने उन लहराते बालों को अपने हाथों से उठाया और उसको अपने अनुभवी आँखों से देखा और कहा बिस-डॉलर।
17. डेला ने कहा कहा कि मुझे जल्दी पैसे दे दीजिये।
18. फिर अगले दो घंटों तक डेला अपनी आँखों में गुलाबी सपने लिये जिम उपहार खरीदने के लिए दुकानों को जानती रही।
19. अंत में उसे वह उपहार मिल गया। यह तो निश्चित रूप से जिम के लिये ही बना है। वह दुकानों के खाफ छानती रही थी पर वैसी चीज उसे और कहीं नहीं दिखी थी। सामान्य पश्र शुद्ध और अपने ढ़ंग का अकेला डिजाइन जो जिम की घड़ी के लिए बिल्कुल फिट था। उन चेन की कीमत लगी इक्कीस डॉलर।
डेला ने बचे 87सेंट लिये और शीघ्रता से घर की ओर चल पड़ी। इस घड़ी में यह चेन लगाकर जिम जहाँ भी जायेगा समय जानने के लिये बेचैन रहेगा। घड़ी तो अच्छी थी ही पर जिम उसे दूसरों की नजरों से छुपाकर देखता था क्योंकि घड़ी के पट्टे चमड़े के थे और पुराने पड़ गये थे।
20.21.25. सभी धर्मों में उपहार देने की परम्परा अत्यंत पुरानी है। ईसाइयों के लिये क्रिसमस, हिन्दुओं के लिये दीपावली और मुसलमानों के लिये खास अवसर होता है। जब डेला घर पहुँची तो चेन खरीदने के समय का नशा उतर गया था और वह सच्चाई की धरातल पर आ गयी थी। उसने बाल घुंघराले करने वाले आयरन निकाले, गैस जलाया और अपने उजड़े बालों को फिर से व्यवस्थित करने में जुट गयी जिन बालों को उसने प्यार के खातिर कुर्बान कर दिया था। यह काम आसान नहीं था।
चालिस मिनट के भीतर उसका सर, छोटे-छोटे घुंघराले बालों से ढ़क गया। अपने चेहरे को देर तक आइने में आलोचनात्मक नजरों से देखती रही।
23.24.25. उसने आत्मचिंतन करते हुए कहा – “अगर जिम मुझे मार न डाले और मुझे दूसरी बार ठीक से देखें तो शायद यह कहे कि मैं कोनी द्वीप की कोरस गाने वाली लड़की की तरह लग रही हूँ। पर मैं करती भी क्या — मेरे पास तो कुल एक डॉलर और सत्तासी सेंट ही थे।”
सात बजे उसने काॅफी बनाई और चाॅप तलने के लिये कढ़ाई को स्टोव पर रख दिया । जिम कभी भी घर आने में देर नहीं करता था।
जिम के घर आने का समय हो रहा था। जिम के पदचाप सीढ़ी पर सुनाई दिये। डेला थोड़ी देर के लिये सफेद पड़ गयी । उसे बराबर छोटी-छोटी बातों के लिए मौन प्रार्थना करने की आदत थी पर इस बार वह फुसफुसाई — से ईश्वर ! उसे यह बुद्धि देना की वह अभी भी मुझे सुन्दर समझे।
26.2728. दरवाजा खुला और जिम ने घर में प्रवेश किया और अन्दर से बंद कर लिया। वह दुबला पतला और अत्यंत गंभीर दिखाई पड़ रहा था । उसे नया ओवर कोट चाहिये था और उसके पास दस्ताने भी नहीं थे।
वह अंदर आया और गया जैसे कोई शिकारी आसपास किसी चिड़िया की उपस्थिति का गंध ले रहा हो। उसकी आँखें डेला पर स्थित थीं। इस भाव ने उसे आतंकित कर दिया। उस भाव में न क्रोध था, न आश्चर्य था, न कोई अप्रत्याशित भाव जिसके लिये वह पहले से तैयार थी। अपने चेहरे पर इस विचित्र भाव को धारण किये वह मात्र डेला को एकटक देखता रहा। डेला मुड़ी और उसके सन्निकट चली गयी।
29 से 34 तक : जिम ! मेरे प्रिय मेरी ओर इस तरह न देखो, वह रो पड़ी। मैंने अपने बाल कटवा लिये है और उन्हें बेच दिया है। ये बाल तो फिर उग आयेंगे — तुम्हें कोई आपत्ती तो नहीं ? मुझे यह करना पड़ा। मेरे बाल बहुत तेजी से बढ़ते हैं। हम एक दूसरे को क्रिसमस का की शुभकामनाये दें और खुश हो जाएँ । तुम्हें पता नहीं मैंने तुम्हारे लिए कितना सुन्दर उपहार रखें है। ऐसा लगा जिम को इस तथ्य को स्वीकारने में गहरा मानसिक कष्ट हो रहा है।
जिम ने कमरे के चारों ओर उत्सुक निगाहें से देखा और कहा तुम कहती हो तुम्हारे बाल समाप्त हो गये। जिम के शब्दों में मूर्खतापूर्ण कथन की झलक थी।
डेला ने कहा — मैंने कहा न कि बाल चले ही नहीं गये आज क्रिसमस पूर्व संध्या है। आज तुम्हारे प्यार की अपेशक्षा है — ये बाल तुम्हारे लिये ही मैंने बेचे। हो सकता है मेरे सर के बाल अब थोड़े ही शेष रहे हों अतः उसकी चिंता करने की आवश्यकता नहीं डेला ने अपने प्यार को और मिठास देते हुए पूछा क्या अब मैं चाॅप बनाना शुरू करू ?
35 से 41तक : ऐसा लगा जिम अचानक मूर्छा से जग गया और उसने डेला को अपनी बाहों में समेट लिया। उसने कहा हम थोड़ी देर के लिये अपना ध्यान दूसरी ओर केन्द्रित करें — आठ डाॅलर प्रति सप्ताह या फिर दस लाख प्रति वर्ष – इसमें क्या अंतर पड़ता है। मेजाई ने बहुमूल्य उपहार लाये थे पर उसमें यह उपहार नहीं था। इस तथ्य का खुलासा तो बाद में होगा।
डेला ने अपनी सफेद उँगलियों से तेजी के साथ कागज को फाड़ा । आनन्द के अतिरेक से डेला चीख उठी। उसकी आँखों में झर – झर आँसू बहने लगे। विलाप का स्वर तेज हो गया जो ज्ञान – शून्यता की स्थिति तक पहुँच गया। उस मकान के मालिक को उस आवेग को रोकने के लिये अपनी सारी शक्ति लगा देने की आवश्यकता पड़ी।
वहाँ तीन कंघियाँ पड़ी थीं – सुन्दर और रत्नजटित । ये कछुए के खोल से बनी थी जिसे कभी डेला ने ‘ब्राडवे’ के शाॅपिंग सेन्टर में देखा था और उसे पाने की मन ही मन उस समय प्रार्थना की थी। ये कंघियाँ महंगी थीं और डेला ने सिर्फ चाह की थी। डेला ने उसे अपनी छाती से लगा लिया। उसने अपनी गीली धुँघली आँखें उठायीं और एक सहज मुस्कान के साथ कहा— मेरे बाल जल्दी बढ़ते हैं, जिम ! फिर डेला एक छोटी बिल्ली की तरह उछल पड़ी और चिल्लायी – ओ ! ओ!
42 से 46तक : जिम ने अभी तक अपना उपहार नहीं देखा था। डेला ने उसे अपनी खुली हथेली पर रखकर जिम के सामने फैला दिया। वह धुंधला बहुमूल्य धातु डेला के अन्तर – मन की चमक के साथ प्रकाशमान हो उठा। क्या यह आकर्षक नहीं है? जिम ! अब तुम इसे लगाकर अपनी घड़ी को दिन में सौ बार देखोगे। अपना रिस्ट वाच मुझे दो — मैं देखूँ कि यह उसमें कैसा लगता है?
जिम उसकी बात मानने के बजाय बिस्तर पर लेट गया और अपने हाथ अपने सिर के नीचे रख मुस्कराने लगा। उन्हें कुछ दिनों तक यूँ ही पड़े रहने दें। मैंने तो वह घड़ी, तुम्हारे उपहार (कंघियाँ) खरीदने के लिये बेच दी। अच्छा अब ऐसा करो कि चाप को कढ़ाई में डाल दो।
शिशु ईसा को उपहार देने वाले मेजाई अत्यंत बुद्धिमान लोग थे जिन्होंने मैंगर में रखे शिशु के लिये उपहार लाया था और उसी समय से क्रिसमस पर उपहार देने की परम्परा का शुभारंभ हुआ था। पर यहाँ तो दो प्रेमी युगल ने मूर्खतापूर्ण ढंग से घर की दो सवोतम धरोहरों को एक दूसरे के लिये कुर्बान कर दिया था। पर आज के बुद्धिमानों के लिये अन्तिम रुप से यह कहा जा सकता है कि आज जिन्होंने भी उपहार देते हैं उनमें ये दोनों सबसे बुद्धिमान थे। उपहार लेने और देने वाले सभी लोग बुद्धिमान हैं — वे ही मेजाई है।
