Words meaning : Sensitive = संवेदनशील। Thoughtful = विचारपूर्ण। Insight = अंतर्दृष्टि।
वाक्यार्थ — रस्किन बाॅन्ड ( जन्म 1934) ने सौ से ऊपर लघु कथाएँ, निबंध, उपन्यास और बच्चों के लिए पुस्तकें लिखी हैं। सन् 1992ई. में उन्हें अंग्रेजी लेखन के लिए ‘ साहित्य अकादमी ‘ का अवार्ड मिला। प्रस्तुत कहानी ” आँखें यहाँ नहीं हैं” एक अति संवेदनशील और विचारपूर्ण कहानी है। यह इस तथ्य को रेखांकित करती है कि नेत्र दृष्टि से अन्तर्दृष्टि ज्यादा महत्त्वपूर्ण है।

Words meaning : Compartment = बोगी। Probably= संभवतः। Anxious= चिन्तित। Comfort= आराम। Unable= असमर्थ। Discover= ढूँढना। Startled = चौंकी। Exclamation= चिल्लाहट।
वाक्यार्थ— मैं रेल के डिब्बे में बैठा था और उसे रोहाना तक जाना था और तभी एक लड़की अंदर आई। जो दम्पति उसे छोड़ने आए थे संभवतः उसके माता-पिता थे : वे उसके आराम को लेकर काफी चिंतित दिखते थे और उस औरत ने उसे कहाँ सामान रखना चाहिए, कब खिड़की के बाहर नहीं झुकना चाहिए और अजनबियों से बातें नहीं करनी चाहिए । उन्होंने उसे विदा किया और रेल स्टेशन छोड़ आगे बढ़ गई।
और उस मैं पूरी तरह से दृष्टिहीन था, मेरी आँखे सिर्फ रोशनी और अंधेरे के प्रति संवेदनशील थीं , मैं यह बताने में असमर्थ हूँ कि वह लड़की कैसी दिखती थी : किंतु जिस प्रकार से उसकी एड़ियों से खटके की आवाज आ रही थी, मैं जान सकता था कि उसने हवाई चप्पल पहन रखी है। लेकिन उसकी आवाज और उसकी चप्पलों की आवाज मुझे प्रिय लगी।
” क्या तुम डेहरा जा रही हो ?” मैंने पूछा ।
निश्चित तौर पर मैं एक अंधेरे कोने में बैठा हुआ था चूंकि मेरी आवाज ने उसे चौंका दिया था। उसने थोड़ी चीख भरी आवाज में कहा, ” मैं नहीं जानती थी कि यहाँ कोई और भी है।”

वाक्यार्थ — ऐसा अक्सर होता है कि जिनकी दृष्टि अच्छी होती है वह अपने ठीक सामने की चीज को नहीं देख पाते । मुझे लगता है कि उन्हें बहुत चीजें देखने को मिल जाती हैं इसलिए ऐसा होता है। जबकि जो देख नहीं पाते उन्हें सिर्फ जरुरी चीजों पर ध्यान देना होता है जो उनके शेष ज्ञान पर ज्यादा असर डालती है।
” मैंने भी तुम्हें नहीं देखा।” मैंने कहा।” किंतु मैंने तुम्हें अंदर आते सुना।”
उस लड़की ने कहा , ” मुझे सहारनपुर उतरना है। मेरी चाची वहाँ मुझे लेने आएगी।” मैंने कहा, ” तब मुझे ज्यादा परिचय नहीं बढ़ाना चाहिए। आमतौर पर चाचियाँ भयानक होती हैं।”
” आप कहाँ जा रहे हैं ? ” उसने पूछा ।
” डेहरा, और वहाँ से मसूरी।”
” ओह, कितने भाग्यवान हैं आप , मेरी भी इच्छा होती है मसूरी जाने की। मुझे पहाड़ों से प्यार है। खासकर के अक्टूबर के महीने में।”
वह चूप थी और मैं सोच रहा था कि मेरे शब्दों ने उसे प्रभावित किया भी किया भी होगा या नहीं अथवा वह मुझे बकबक करने वाला मुर्ख समझ रहीं है। तब मैंने एक भूल कर दी ।
मैंने पूछ लिया , ” यह कैसा दिखता है ? ” ऐसा लगा जैसे कि उसे इस प्रश्न में कुछ अनोखा नहीं लगा। किंतु उसके अगले प्रशन ने मेरे सन्देह को दूर कर दिया।
” आप खिड़की के बाहर क्यूँ नहीं देखते हैं?” उसने पूछा।
मैं आराम से अपनी सीट के आगे बढ़ा और खिड़की के उभार को छूआ । मैंने इंजन के हाँफने का स्वर सुना , पहियों की खड़खड़ाहट सुनी और दिमाग की आँखो से मैंने संसार – खंभों को तेजी से गुजरते हुए देखा।

Words meaning : ventured= साहस किया। Hardly = शायद ही। Safe= सुरक्षित। Flattery = चापलूसी। Pleasantly = मोहकता से। Gallant= भड़कीला। Lonely = अकेला। Sparkle= प्रभा।Encounter = लड़ाई। Plaited = चोटी की हुई।
वाक्यार्थ — मैंने साहस कर कहा,” क्या तुमने ध्यान दिया कि हम शांत बैठे लगते हैं जबकि पेड़ भागते हुए लगते हैं।”
” ऐसा हमेशा होता है, ” उसने कहा ” क्या आपको कोई जानवर दिखता है ? ” डेहरा के निकट शायद ही कोई जानवर में बचा हो।
मैंने टिप्पणी की, ” तुम्हारा चेहरा रोचक है।” मैं एकदम साहसी होता जा रहा था। शायद ही कोई लड़की प्रशंसा से बचना चाहती हो।
वह एकदम खनक के साथ हँसी।” मुझे सुनकर अच्छा लगा कि मेरा चेहरा रोचक है। यह सुनकर मैं थक गई हूँ कि मेरा चेहरा सुंदर है।
लड़की उठी और अपना समान इक्कठा करने लगी । मैं ख्यालों में डूब गया कि उसके बाल जूड़े में बँधे हैं, गूंथे हुए हैं, चोटी की हुई है या उसके कन्धों पर खुली हुई बिखरी है या बहुत ही छोटे हैं।
रेलगाड़ी धीरे-धीरे स्टेशन पर रुकी । बाहर कुलियों और खोमचेवालों का शोर था और डिब्बे के दरवाजे के पास एक औरत की आवाज आ रही थी जो शायद उस लड़की का चाची की आवाज थीं ।

Words meaning : perfume= सुगंध । Tantalising = तरसाने, ललचानें। Lingered= देर तक ठहरा। Shatter= हिलाना। Vase= कलश, बर्तन। Stammered= हकलाया। Apology= क्षमा माँगना। Moved off= चल पड़े। Fascinating= मनोहर। Reverie= चिन्तन। Puzzled = भ्रान्ति ।
वाक्यार्थ — ” अलविदा, ” लड़की ने कहा।
वह मेरे बिल्कुल निकट खड़ी थी, इतनी करीब की उसके बालों से आने वाली सुगंध मुझे ललचा रही थी। किंतु वह आगे बढ़ गई और जहाँ वह खड़ी थी वहाँ अब सिर्फ वह सुगंध शेष रह गई ।
‘ आप फूलदान को तोड़ सकते हैं पर गुलाब की महक फिर भी देर तक बरकरार रहेगी……
तभी दरवाजा बंद हो गया और दुनिया बाहर रह गई। मैं अपनी सीट पर वापस आ गया। गार्ड ने सीटी बजाई और हम चल पड़े। एक बार फिर , मेरे पास खेलने को एक नया सहयात्री।
गाड़ी जोरों से चल पड़ी। मैं खिड़की के सामने बैठा दिन की रोशनी को घूर रहा था जो मेरे लिए अंधकार थी।
वह आदमी जो बोगी में प्रवेश किया था, उसने मेरे चिन्तन में बांधा डाली।
उसने कहा, ” आप दुखी होंगे , मुझे खेद है कि मैं अभी- अभी उतरे सहयात्री जितना आकर्षक नहीं हूँ।
मैंने कहा, ” वह एक रोचक लड़की थी । क्या तुम मुझे बता सकते हो कि उसके बाल लम्बे थे या छोटे ?”
उसने कहा, ” मुझे याद नहीं है, ” उसकी आवाज भ्रम में पड़ी थी ” मैंने उसकी आँखों पर ही गौर किया, बालों पर नहीं। उसकी आँखें सुंदर थीं, पर उसके किसी काम की नहीं , वह पूरी तरह अंधी थी। आपने ध्यान नहीं दिया ? ”

Ans . The writer had knew through the girl that her face was beautiful. Then the perfume of her hair made him think the detail about her hair.
the man had replied that he couldn’t notice her hair. He only noticed her eyes which were beautiful bout no use of her as she was completely blind. It throws on the similarity of the two – the narrator and the girl –that both of them were blind.
Q.2 . How will you describe the experience of the narrator : interesting, Dull or instructive ?Describe a similar experience of your own.
Ans . The narrator’s experience is quite interesting. I haven’t got a chance to encountersuch a similar experience.

Ans . The Writer was an interesting person. He was a gallant young man. He was eager to now everything about his surrounding. He was of a jolly Nature who loved flattering.
Q.4. Was the girl a lover of natural scenes and situations? Describe the behavior of the girl highlighting what strikes you as odd.
Ans . Yes, the girl was a lover of natural scenes and situations. She became Pleased hearing that the narrator was going to Mussoorie. She had asked the Narrator to look out of the window, so that he may be engaged in natural Scenes and leave him alone. The girl’s behavior was interesting. She had a good sense of humour. What strikes me as off is that she also flattered with The narrator saying that he was a very gallant young man – when the fact is that she was complete blind .
Q.5.Why were the girl’s beautiful eyes of no use to her ? Attempt a character sketch of the girl.
Ans. The girl’s eyes had no light. She was complete blind. So, despite her Beautiful eyes, they were of no use to her. The girl was interesting, intelligent and had good sense of humour.she was of an adjustable nature who could easily mix-up with an unknown stranger.

Ans . The story throws light on the certain human behaviour which is the Following : Humans always try to hide their weakness. Humans of good eyesight Fail to see what is right in front of them, where man loves to flirt a girl of woman whenever he gets a chance, only few girls can resist flattery. The story also underlines the fact that in journey people love to play games with their travelling companion.

Ans. Appearance is not always true to be judged. All that glitters are not gold. People are not always like that as they are seen. They have hidden personality within. Many a times we meet or come to know that some persons repute as honest proved to be the most dishonest one . present leaders of our country are best examples to the saying. They appear to be most sincere for people and the society and the country . But we know that they are mostly concerned to raise their own private property. So, it is rightly said that Appearance is deceptive .
